The Reverend Nicholas A. Johnson began as RVBC's pastor in December 2014. Pastor Nick is a proud native of Newark, NJ and was called to ministry as a teenager. He has served the church in numerous capacities. Prior to arriving at RVBC, Pastor Nick was the assistant pastor to his home congregation, Good Neighbor Baptist Church, in Newark. Pastor Nick graduated from Seton Hall Preparatory School in West Orange, NJ in 2006. While in high school, he took up additional studies at the Newark School of Theology, taking courses in biblical studies, church history, and theology. A 2010 college graduate, Pastor Nick received Bachelor of Arts degrees with honors in history and religious studies from the University of Chicago. While in college, he was the recipient of numerous awards: the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship and the Fund for Theological Exploration's (formerly the Fund for Theological Education) Undergraduate and Congregational Fellowships. In May 2013, Pastor Nick received a Master of Divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary where he was awarded the E.L. Wailes Memorial Award in New Testament, the Raymond Lindquist Fellowship in the Parish Ministry, and the Matthew Anderson, Jonathan C. Gibbs, and John B. Reeve Award. He is currently pursuing a PhD in New Testament and Early Christianity at Drew University.
Pastor Nick looks forward to a fruitful and transformative relationship with RVBC, a thriving inter-cultural and inter-generational faith community. He is excited at what God has in store for RVBC’s future. Guided by the following scripture, Pastor Nick is certain that RVBC will accomplish wonderful things: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6).
